Name, 2023 — Sana Na N’Hada, Guinea-Bissau/France/Portugal/Angola (117′)

Sana Na N’Hada, an important filmmaker from Guinea-Bissau, joined the liberation struggles when he was still a teenager and, together with Flora Gomes, Josefina Lopes Crato and José Bolama Cobumba, was sent to Cuba in 1967 by Amílcar Cabral to study cinema, returning years later to document the war and current affairs in Guinea.

We travel through the history of Guinea-Bissau with Nome, a character from a small village who joins the PAIGC guerrilla group to fight the Portuguese forces. The fictional representations of the struggle are accompanied by archive footage of the clashes, captured in the 1970s by Sana na N’Hada and his colleagues during the colonial war. The story continues after independence and with the return of Nome, where we encounter the uncertainties, instabilities and deviations that characterise the fragility of a newly liberated “new” country that is still trying to define itself, but is still entangled in the ways and structures of functioning inherited from colonisation.

* The screening will be attended by director Fernando Matos Silva.
